Thor - Classic Mythology II

Just got the clearance to share this.

Thor, a special promotional card for Perna Studio's Classic Mythology II limited edition sketch card series.  The announcement and final appearance of the card can be seen here: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Thor-Promo-Card-P3-372948839

Here's the B&W line art:
I'll have 11x17" giclee prints of the colour version available at the Fan Expo in August.

I'd really like to do at least another ten of these Norse mythology pieces and I'll likely do a larger Valkyrie as a personal piece for August as well.

Toronto Comicon Day Two Sketches

I added some black linework on the Thor with a Copic after the black pencil crayon could only go as dark as a pencil on the stock used for the cover, but that was after the pic was taken.

And another Wolverine.

Thor Damn It!

Blogger hasn't restored the Thorsday Threesome and I wasn't able to upload anything yesterday so I'm posting five cards today and hoping they stay up.

Five Times the Thor! FCBD

Seeing Thor today and it's Free Comic Book Day, so I thought I could go a little goofy and put five of the Thor cards up instead of the usual one.

Looking forward to the movie and taking a look at how things are going at my local comic shop during FCBD.

Marvel Beginnings - Thor

Thor.

I know, right?!

Right in the middle of the 99 B&W Thor sketch cards I actually did a colour Thor card for Marvel Beginnings.

Actually, I did two

I like Thor, obviously.

Alterna-Thor

I'm certain everyone reading this blog knows there's a Thor movie coming.  Heck, the reason Upperdeck (the company I've done all those sketch cards for) is even doing a card set is merchandising for the film.  Thor will look like this in the movie:
Damn -- this boy's pretty!

I really doubt the Vikings saw Thor like that.  In the stories he was a furious brawler and drinker.  He championed the stuff that people in polite society would tut-tut over and decry as the habits of the lower classes.

I dunno that a real Viking would have been impressed if Thor showed up and looked like Chris Hemsworth.  In fact, I think he'd be downright disappointed.

To paraphrase Mickey from ROCKY, they'd want a guy who looks like he could eat lightning and crap thunder, drink a whole village under the table and lay the smack down on a swarm of frost giants.  All at the same time.

Badass.
A little more like the warm-up drawing I did earlier -- but taller and smells more like goats.

Thor Artist Proof

I really like the new look of Thor -- if something a few years old can be considered new in comics nowadays. I think I'm in the area of what Olivier Coipel is/was doing with Thor's facial structure, but I'd probably need a few more sketches to feel fully comfortable with the head structure and proportions he introduced.

Of course, I wouldn't be doing those drawings on 2.5 x 3.5" pieces of card stock.

Iron Man II Card for Feb. 16

Always loved the mythological characters. Thor and Hercules would be a blast to draw on an ongoing basis, not just they're fun characters on their own, but their villians are often just freaky montrous things to draw.
