Another Conan Sketch

Still playing around with the new G-nib fountain pen -- it does tend to dry up a bit if I'm not constantly using it, but that's the only negative so far.  It partners really nicely with the Pentel Pocket Brush so I'm thinking of doing the next few work things with these tools to see if the romance continues.

The last Conan sketch was rather popular and I've been asked to do a few commissions as a result  -- the above is one of the few I accepted.  It's a sketch card on 2.5x3.5" Bristol.

New Pen Conan Head Sketch

Bought a new pen from Jetpens -- it's a Tachigawa fine G-nib fountain pen and I think I'm falling in love with it even before it's fully broken in.  The brushy bits are with a Pentel Pocket Brush.

Steroid-blasted Square Peg

I see some over-muscled drawings of Batman and Superman practically every day and I usually shrug and ignore them, but I've just saw a few by people who should really know better.

I may be really old school about this, but Superman is supposed to be able to pass as a regular human and doesn't need to look like a failed Hulk.

My fave Supes is a toss-up between Steve Rude's or Adam Hughes' versions with Neal Adams' 70s take almost in there as well.

ASHES Chapter 6 cover

Chapter 6 is being broken down into two parts as Bill Sienkiewicz and R. M. Guerra are digging out from under rather large projects so Alex asked me to do a chapter cover for part 6A.

There's a very positive review of the first serialized chapters of ASHES over here, which includes links to retailers around the world that will carry the limited print run of this book.

Just found out there are still some retailer packages available of 5 copies with promotional  material -- probably best to contact Alex directly about that at the original ASHES Kickstarter page !

Another ASHES teaser

Nice little splash page from my portion of the book.

Copying and pasting relevant info from previous entries below:

As I mentioned before, there's a great review of the first digitally serialised chapters of Alex DeCampi's 250-page original graphic novel, ASHES, over at Bleeding Cool, which also has ordering information if you missed out on the Kickstarter.

The above is from one of the nearly 50 pages I drew and coloured for the book.  It's an impressive collection of artists to collaborate with, including Dan McDaid, Mack Chater, Milton & Felipe Sobreiro, Carla Speed McNeil, Colleen Doran, Bill Sienkiewicz, Alice Duke, Alem Curin, RM Guerra and others.

ASHES, Dr. Van Meter painting

Wanted to try out the newer elements of CS5 after upgrading from Photoshop CS2 and realizing I would have to without Painter going forward, so I did a painting based on a character featured in my portion of Alex de Campi's ASHES graphic novel.

Alex liked it, so it's going to be a chapter cover in the trade collection!

Bram Stoker Vamps in progress

Well, got too ambitious and ended up not finishing this today, but I think I accomplished a fair amount for something intended as a quick sketch.

I spent the most time trying to figure out what to do with the background when I decided there had to be a background.  It'd probably only take a few more hours for the figures, but I have to teach tomorrow, so this will have to wait!

Bram Stoker's Birthday Vampire (updated)

So, it's Bram Stoker's birthday and I'm thinking it could be a thing to make it an annual 'draw a vampire day"  sort of thing.

I started off with the sketch above and got carried away into a full-blow painting.  I'll post that as it's done!
Here's where I started getting carried away;  adding wolves and thinking of a larger composition.

I've already added a tree to the painting.

ASHES teaser panel 2

Actually, it's a two panel teaser. . .

As I mentioned before, there's a great review of the first digitally serialised chapters of Alex DeCampi's 250-page original graphic novel, ASHES, over at Bleeding Cool, which also has ordering information if you missed out on the Kickstarter.

Self Portrait 2012 - Final

What a time to discover Painter X doesn't run on my new computer.

Engaged in a bunch of layers and blurring of the same to bury some really weak painting under a simulation of what my studio mirror looks like with all the dust and finger prints on it.

International Self Portrait Day 2012

Forgot until I saw a reminder quite late in the day -- it's the annual International Self-Portrait Day!  It's all happening over here http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?253050-SELF-PORTRAIT-DAY-NOVEMBER-1st-JOIN-!!!

I've managed a toned pencil sketch so far (HB sketch, 2B tonal smudge-fest, with a 4B outline and generall darkening), though I won't be able to spend near the amount of time I did last year I will try to make this into a painting by the end of the day.  So, hopefully this is just a work in progress.

ASHES teaser panel

Chosen for its Halloweenishness:

There's a great review of the first digitally serialised chapters of Alex DeCampi's ASHES 250-page original graphic novel over at Bleeding Cool, which also has ordering information if you missed out on the Kickstarter.

Above is a panel from one of the nearly 50 pages I did for the book.  It's an intimidating collection of artists to run with, including Dan McDaid, Mack Chater, Milton & Felipe Sobreiro, Carla Speed McNeil, Colleen Doran, Bill Sienkiewicz, Alice Duke, Alem Curin, RM Guerra and others.  It was my first time drawing and coloring that many pages for a single project so it was a learning experience and almost like learning to run again after the years spent working outside comics.  I think I drove Alex half-mad with how late I pushed things -- or perhaps just the rest of the way!  The story is that crazy-good, so I have my suspicions . . .

Sometimes it's better to start over

Inking the artwork for the upcoming Perna Studios Sorcery set and realised I was blowing it;  some of the base drawing was off and I was making some thoughtless line work on top of some poorly planned pencils that I only noticed after the line went down.

Oh, well.  I can make adjustments and start over inking tomorrow.

Men of the Shadows, part 2

Robert E. Howard's SAVAGE SWORD #6 should be out from Dark Horse in the not too distant, so I thought I'd start teasing some of the art from the second instalment of Men of the Shadows.

Red Sonja and Bran Mak Morn

I took a couple of pictures of some sketches I did at Fan Expo -- I thought this one turned out well enough to share.  Red Sonja:

Also, I put all the pages from the first installment of Men of the Shadows for sale in my comicartfans gallery (here).

Fan Expo 2012 Postmortem

Woot!

Still a little wiped out by the Fan Expo this past weekend.  Met a bunch of great people, saw a number of great friends I realised I missed more than I knew.  It's over for another year and the tired part of me is happy about that, but I'm also looking forward to next year.

Did a few pencil-only sketches I'm happy with -- the Wolverine above is actually an orphan piece left over after the con.

The highlight of the con was likely Darwyn Cooke's surprise visit to my table to tell me he thinks I'm an asshole.  I'm not certain whether he expected me to apologise or cower in fear, but I did neither.  I'm pretty certain these are the reasons for Darwyn's visit.

I do feel obligated to point out I've a number of mutual friends who have nothing but the best things to say about Darwyn.  I will gladly and enthusiastically support his work when it's not siding with a corporation against a fellow creator's (in this case co-creator) control over their creation.

Really miss having the time to do the weekly strips.  I'll be starting a new weekly strip in the Fall, but it won't be a return to Burning Itch since I'd rather turn to a serialized narrative and work toward a conclusion.  That's not something you can do when trying to be of the moment.

Back to work on ASHES and Bran Mak Morn!

Fan Expo Canada 2012

Hi all,

It's just a couple of days until the madness of Fan Expo begins anew!

First off, You can find me between the most awesome pair of artists, Dale Keown and Leonard Kirk here:

As usual I'll be doing sketches, selling original art and a few prints as well as signing books.  Speaking of signing books:
Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword #5 is out (or will be out this Wednesday in Canada) with the Bran Mak Morn story I worked on!  In addition to signing this book I'll do a free sketch card of a Pict for you after signing the book at this show!

I'll the following prints available.  All are high quality prints on 11x17" Ilford Galerie pearl finish paper.

I'm retiring the Spike print after this show, so this will be the last time I'll have prints of this cover available for purchase.

Also, the 50% art sale ends at the start of the Fan Expo -- you can see the work and terms here.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to answer as soon as possible.

Bran Mak Morn!

I've heard Robert E. Howard's Savage Sword #5 is available at most friendly neighbourhood comics shops! It's strange how I'm only now drawing a Robert E. Howard creation when his characters were so instrumental to my desire to draw comics back when I was 12.

Here's the first appearance of Bran Mak Morn on the final page of Ian Edginton and my adaptation of Howard's Men of the Shadows.  Moose Baumann's colours are spectacular.

We've two more parts -- in Savage Sword issues 6 and 7.
FREE THE PICTS!!!
I'm very excited about this book being available just before Fan Expo Canada  (it's under a week away people!) and I think I need to share that.  If you bring a copy of this issue for me to sign I'll do a free sketch of a Pict on a 2.5x3.5 Bristol sketch card.

If your local retailer hasn't ordered it you may be able to get a copy through Dark Horse's retail arm linked on this page http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/18-417/Robert-E-Howard-s-Savage-Sword-5

Pre-Fan Expo Art Sale Aug 10-22

Two days ago one of my art shelves gave up the ghost under the weight of the work piled on it.  Nothing was damaged, but it made me realise I've too much original artwork in too little space in my studio.  I've decided to have a 50% off sale leading up to the Canadian Fan Expo this Month (August 23-26).

Process
Send an e-mail to richardpace(at)rogers(dot)com  (the (at) and (dot) should be replaced with the @ and an actual . for the e-mail) and I'll put the piece on hold until payment is in my Paypal account.

Payment
For this sale I'll accepting Paypal only.

Shipping
To keep things simple all large original art will default to $25 and any sketch cards will be $5 for regular shipping and handling for destinations in Canada and the US.  International destinations should drop me a note so I can check rates   Insurance, expedited delivery  and tracking for small packages will be extra. I'll combine shipping for multiple items.

Other questions
Please ask either in the comments below or drop me a note at richardpace(at)rogers(dot)com and I'll answer as soon as I can.

I've already been asked if I'll waive shipping and handling if you pick up the work at the Fan Expo.  I can do that, but I can't put the payment off until then; it'd be unfair to other potential purchasers and there's the risk of the stars not aligning properly and the transaction not occurring. I do realise a cash transaction is 'better', but it would run against the nature of this being a limited duration sale.

Comicartfans Gallery -- there's some work already posted at my gallery there, if it's still available and not listed here yet, consider those works on sale as well.  For example,  http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=649268&GSub=99774  is a part of the sale, it's listed for 300.00, but I'll sell it for 150.00 for the duration of this sale.

This will be a first-come-first-served sale, not an auction.  I'll try to update as quickly as I can as the work goes, but I am working on a few deadlines, so I'll be allocating my time to update the status to just  a few times a day.  Further, I'll be adding more pieces to the sale over the next week.
